Rock “critics” have tried to categorize Clutch since 1994. “They” have classified the band as “Stoner Rock.” I’m not sure I know what that is. Is it the music that played in the background when Scooby and Shaggy were running from the ghosts in the special guest episodes? Personally, I think of Phish or Rusted Root when I hear that term, but certainly not Clutch. The only thing that’s certain is that there is not a band today that is like them and there never has been. They defy categorization.
Clutch are currently busy saving the genre known as rock through meta-cognative, hyper-rock songs and performances. While they are at it, they have managed to re-infuse rock with its true subversive backbone. We fans simply refer to ourselves as, “Gear Heads.”
Why don’t you have a look at this brilliant video that a gear-head produced as a typography project.
